Umoja

"MoMo", better known as Umoja Nia Trotman which means 'purpose' and 'unity' has been an aspiring rap artist for years. This San Francisco native was born April 22, 1972 to the parents of John Trotman and Linda Finley. From an early age, Umoja has developed a passion for rap lyrics over intense hip-hop beats. In surrounding himself with tracks and rhymes, he was introduced to two of the industry's heavy hitters, Snoop Dogg and Domino, who he became acquainted with while attending John Marshall Jr. High. This encounter opened the door to his newfound career as an artist. In the early nineties, Umoja formed a group called 'Main Ingredient', little did he know that his hard work and determination would not be enough to release the album.

One yar later, Umoja's chance for fame and acknowledgement came when he collaborated with 'Jay Mac', who is a well known music producer. The album "Alley Kats" was Umoja's second attempt to be heard. This album included tracks such as "Tools We Use", and "I Like". After experiencing the joys of recording these tracks, Umoja encountered an untimely setback which owul dtake his focus partially away from music. With his dreams in mind Umoja moved to Atlanta, Georgia in the late nineties to continue the pursuit of his career as an up and coming artist. Atlanta was a new life for Umoja.

Still surrounding himself with the recording industry, he has displayed his talents at the V-103 Family Day in Grant Park, the venue included well known artists such as Chico DeBarge, Montell Jordan, and Immature. Umoja also has performed at Cafe Echelon, a well-known hot spot with the group "Shades"; BET's Rachel hosted this event. 1999 played a key part in Umoja's life, he signed a deal with 'Buried Cable Productions'. This led to a twelve-song album, which was never released. Envisioning his goals in mind, Umoja still continued his journey as an artist. In 2000, Umoja worked with industry figures such as DJ Gemini as an MC at Club Carnival in Buckhead and DJ M&M, one of Atlanta's most recognized radio personalities.

Through setbacks, learning experiences, and challenges, Umoja still continues to follow his life's long love of becoming a rap artist. Not being confined to the norm, Umoja believes in taking chances and creating his future as an artist. Though he still struggles to be recognized for his talent and work, Umoja in the eyes of his peers is considered to be one of the industry's hardworking and dedicated individuals. Umoja has his mind made up to look forward to his future of becoming of hip-hop's most creative and talented artists. Look for him soon!
